Location (view location)

The 2 MWel  / 5.6 MWth biomass co-generation plant is situated in the well wooded region Eisenwurzen in Lower Austria. Located at the edge of the city Gresten it is another good example for decentralized energy supply from the sustainable energy resource biomass. The power plant produces approximately 16.000 MWh current annually that is  fed in the local power supply net, and delivers 5.800 MWh heat to the local long-distance heating net at present, which supplies about 2000 inhabitants in Gresten. Through the industrial companies in the surrounding area the power plant has good possibilities of upgrading the long-distance heating net.

Concept

Cycleenergy runs the power plant as a Joint Venture with Porr AG, one of the biggest Austrian building contractors. The power plant was originally built by Porr and Cycleenergy took it over before the commissioning. The CHP uses 17.500 tons of wood garbage annually, which are delivered from local companies. The attached store covers approximately ten days of stock, and the extension of the distribution of heat is one of the main goals for Cycleenergy in 2009.

The CHP has an additional annual heat production capacity of 22.000 MWh to 23.000 MWh. Heat can be provided as hot water (forward temperature 90°C, return temperature 60 °C) or as saturated steam at 1,6 bar (absolute pressure). In addition, significant amounts of low temperature heat from vacuum condensing can be provided for pre-heating of drying air to a temperature of approx. 30°C.  Backup and peak capacity can be provided from the neighbouring biomass heating plant.
